Pinewood, Lytham

Listed House Renovation, Extension & Interior Design

Pinewood is a substantial listed period house in Lytham, Lancashire, comprehensively renovated and extended to create a highly individual contemporary family home while retaining the character and architectural presence of the original building.

The project involved the careful reorganisation and refurbishment of the existing house together with new architectural interventions, interior design and bespoke detailing. The approach was deliberately respectful of the historic exterior while allowing the interiors to develop a much stronger and more personal identity.

Original proportions, tall sash windows, decorative plasterwork, fireplaces, joinery and the principal staircase were retained and incorporated into the new design. A rich palette of deep blue and neutral finishes, parquet flooring, decorative lighting, artwork and collected furniture creates a series of distinctive rooms that feel contemporary without losing the atmosphere of the original house.

New steel-framed glazed screens and doors were introduced internally to improve connections between the entrance hall, kitchen, dining and living spaces while maintaining a sense of separation between rooms. Their fine dark frames provide a contemporary counterpoint to the traditional architectural detailing.

The kitchen and dining spaces were completely redesigned around generous entertaining and family living, with bespoke cabinetry, a substantial stone-topped island and carefully integrated lighting and finishes. The principal reception room retains its historic scale and character, complemented by bespoke decorative treatments and an eclectic collection of furniture, artwork and objects.

To the rear, new glazed extensions reinterpret the proportions of a traditional orangery in a more contemporary language. Large areas of glazing bring natural light deep into the plan and strengthen the relationship between the house and its garden, while brickwork and carefully proportioned detailing connect the additions back to the original building.

Throughout Pinewood, the objective was not to reproduce a period interior, but to retain the architectural integrity of the listed house while creating a distinctive home appropriate to contemporary living.
